about

Elo Zar, born Lerato Sellane is a Soweto born singer song writer. She first found her voice performing in her church choir. Elo Zar has earned her musical stripes having worked in music administration at Universal. She has performed as a backing vocalist for Vusi Nova, she has been mentored by Nothende, touring Africa with her in the process. And finally found her sound at Tshepang Ramoba’s POST POST Music stable.

Citing influences that vary from Thandiswa Mazwai to FKA twigs. Elo Zar’s sound is an experiment in melancholic, R&B influenced, electro. Her first single “stare” released in 2015 garnered reviews from Afropunk, The Key of Philadelphia and OkayAfrica. Who described the track as "a promising and nostalgic statement about self-acceptance built on a pumping bass progression and shimmering guitar lines".

2016 brings the release of her debut EP ELOgram. A six track offering that leads with the hauntingly utopic “Be it”. The lyrics of this song lay bare hopeful ambition and unceasing desire to self-manifest as an artist. Listeners can expect a steady instrumental beat with minimalistic arrangements that blend synthesized arpeggios with soft strings and xylophone, creating an atmosphere that oscillates between light and darkness. “Be it” will be accompanied by Elo Zar’s first music video; directed by the award winning Tebogo Malope. Behind the scenes footage for the video shows a pink fantasy world built for the songstress with the pink afro.

Notable tracks on the EP include the yearning “Make You Stay” which was written for the film “Golden Highway”. It begins with an emotive piano melody which introduces a graduating rhythmic section with a groovy bassline and electronic keys. “Survive” is a percussive upbeat tempo where Elo Zar delivers an ever-ascending chorus over embracing warm guitars.

OkayAfrica described the iTunes exclusive “Stare” as “an electro-pop track carried by the newcomer’s hazy R&B-influenced delivery”. Elo Zar describes it as “a song that reminds me of myself when I was carefree, sometimes reckless yet still choosing and loving myself. So this song takes me to a place where I watch that me and deeply want to reacquaint myself, while the current me still is in this pit of being the good person towards others.”
